Marija Kovačević is a Serbian born, New York City based musician who works in classical, experimental, and improvised music. In May of 2023 we traveled to the Great Basin Desert in Utah where she recorded her album, Music for Broken Violins Vol. 3 Sun Tunnels. The album was recorded at Sun Tunnels (1973–1976), a concrete and steel art installation by Nancy Holt.
Holt’s Sun Tunnels is comprised of four concrete structures arranged in a cross formation, positioned to frame the sun as it rises and sets during the summer and winter solstices. Holes were configured in the concrete to cast projections of constellations (Draco, Perseus, Columba, and Capricorn) along the tunnels’ interiors.
I documented the recording process on film and video over the span of two days. The images shown above were used to promote the album’s release, along with a live sound/movement performance hosted by Earshot NYC. Also shown above is the 8.5”x11” pamphlet I created for attendees. The artists’ biographies were arranged in a cross formation, corresponding to the constellation they represented in the performance.
